Summary
Deschutes County is accepting applications for Law Clerks; this is an intern position working in the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office. Under the direction of the Deputy District Attorneys, the Law Clerk will assist with all aspects of prosecution, with a focus on misdemeanor prosecution. The Law Clerk will be mentored by the Deputy District Attorneys and is expected to appear in court, learn the prosecution philosophy of the office, and have hands-on experience with motions, trials and investigations.

Compensation
$20.2585 per hour. Outside of state or federally mandated benefits, there are no County benefits available to you with this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have completed two years of law school and been admitted to practice law by the Oregon Supreme Court pursuant to the Student Appearance Rule. This certification must be obtained prior to being assigned criminal cases for court appearance purposes.

Must have knowledge of the following:

  • Oregon criminal law and procedure, having successfully passed evidence and criminal law classes at law school.
  • Oregon State Bar ethical rules.

Must have ability to:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Accept directions and follow policies and procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics :
A writing sample may be submitted and should be law related, criminal law, or procedure. Please attach your sample to the Attachments section of your application profile. Failure to submit a writing sample will not disqualify the applicant.
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
